Positive experiences and approaches with autistic girls in school and community group settings
Jo Dilworth and Zara Wright highlight real life experiences of autistic girls and teens and explain why a positive approach is so important. Jo gives an overview of Appeer’s positive peer-based approach to support autistic girls in the community to connect, share interests and understand and support themselves. Zara shares examples of positive effective practice she uses in schools.
This session is aimed at SLT, SEND and Inclusion staff, TAs, teaching staff, parents/carers including neurodivergent parents/carers, autistic and neurodivergent staff.

Jo Dilworth is founder and CEO of Appeer Community Interest Company. It’s a not for profit organisation set up to benefit autistic and neurodiverse girls and women and those around them. A parent to autistic children and a neurodivergent woman herself, having been diagnosed at 40. Jo is incredibly passionate about connecting the girls/women and parents/carers which Appeer supports through their shared social interests, using a positive strengths-based approach. These interests include animation and gaming, animals, baking, science, books and films. Jo has a strong background in education, having worked in mainstream and specialist provisions. She founded and managed the SEND and Inclusion offering at The London Grid for Learning for a number of years. She has Postgraduate Certificates in Education and Autism and a Graduate Certificate in Psychology.
Zara Wright is the Strategic Lead for SEND at Weydon Multi Academy Trust. A qualified Teacher and SENDCo, Zara has worked in specialist and mainstream schools for 15 years. She has a Masters Degree in Inclusive Education and is currently studying for a Masters Degree in Psychology. Zara is also proud to be an LGBT+ ally.
